Lady Vols Suprise Stanford

What a monster night for Shekinna Stricklen. Her game was sic! She scored eight of her season-high 25 points in overtime and The Lady Vols threw down on No. 3 Stanford 79-69 on Sunday night.

In all honesty, it was touch and go for awhile. Stanford went on a late run to erase the Lady Vols' lead but our defense stood strong at the end and it was on to Over Time. We arrived at over time on a great play by Alicia Manning who blocked a shot with 3 seconds left, but "Kinna" Stricklen missed a late attempt just as time expired. But, having no fear, "Kinna" went inot over time hot as a firecracker. She was knocking down her shots, including a long jumper and two 3s which gave our Lady Vols a 76-69 lead with 2:48 left. We can't forget about the real deal Angie Bjorklund either. She added 16 points for Tennessee. On the defensive side of things, even though the Ladies were out rebounded tonight by Stanford, Stricklen and Vicki Baugh had seven rebounds each. Jayne Appel had her usual good game and led Stanford with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Her teammates Pohlen and Pedersen added 16 points and 15 points respectively.

Tennessee’s shooting was cold for the first two minutes, but the Lady Vols remained strong and slowly built and held onto a lead through the first half. With four first-half 3s, from Angie B and Little Bass. The Lady Vols shot 45.7 percent from the field in the first half compared to Stanford’s 40 percent and took a 41-32 lead into halftime.

Everyone keeps calling it a rematch of last year’s NCAA national championship game, when TN beat Stanford and won its eighth title, but without the starting five from last year, and without Candice Wiggins for Stanford this wasn't a rematch, it was simply two great programs playing each other again. Yet, if the experts want to call it a rematch, then yea, okay, it was a rematch and the Lady Vols won again!
